Khulna: Leaders of the Zia Cricket Tournament Conducting Committee claimed today that the country's stadiums had been converted into sanctuaries for drug addicts during the previous Awami League regime. They noted that efforts are now being made to restore the stadiums' former glory by organizing regular events. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the allegations were made during a press conference held at the Khulna District Sports Association Auditorium. The event was addressed by BNP's Central Student Affairs Secretary Rakibul Islam Bakul, in anticipation of the Zia Cricket Tournament scheduled to begin tomorrow. Other notable attendees included Convener of the Tournament Committee Rafiqul Islam Babu, Member Secretary Debbroto Paul, former Cricketer Mehrab Hossain Opi, and Member Secretary of the city unit BNP, Shafiqul Alam Tuhuin. Rakibul Islam Bakul criticized the previous Awami League government, accusing them of providing drugs to the youth instead of promoting sports activities. He also alleg ed that educational institutions were similarly turned into drug sanctuaries. The BNP leader expressed a commitment to making Khulna a drug-free society by organizing various sporting events for the youth. Highlighting the significance of the Zia Cricket Tournament, Bakul revealed that national team players would participate, allowing the youth to showcase their talents. He emphasized that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman prioritized sports and encouraged youth involvement in such activities. The tournament is set to take place across 10 divisions in the country, with the Khulna event commencing at the Khulna District Stadium.
