Dhaka:The potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to circumvent the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and compromise chemical safety was a central focus at a training workshop held in Dhaka.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bangladesh National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) organized the workshop on AI's impact on the CWC and chemical safety at the Multipurpose Hall of the Armed Forces Division on October 28. The event aimed to enhance understanding among participants on how AI-based capabilities could be misused to bypass the convention's provisions, undermine security measures, and potentially cause chemical accidents. It also sought to identify appropriate preventive measures.
A total of 33 participants from various chemical industries and associations, involved in the import, use, purchase, and sale of scheduled chemicals, attended the workshop. Speakers at the event highlighted different aspects of ensuring the safe and appropriate use of chemicals in the context of AI integration.
BNACWC Member Secretary Commodore M Kibria Haq, who served as the chief guest, emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts among all relevant stakeholders, in collaboration with the BNACWC, to tackle challenges arising from the dual-use nature of AI. Following his speech, the chief guest distributed certificates to the participants, as mentioned in the press release.
