Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against six serving and former officials of Bangladesh Railway, alleging irregularities that resulted in a loss of approximately Tk 358 crore in the procurement of 125 luggage vans. The announcement was made by ACC Director General Md Akhter Hossain during a press briefing at the commission's headquarters.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case was lodged last Thursday at the ACC Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1, by ACC Deputy Assistant Director Md Habibur Rahman. The charges were filed under relevant sections of the Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. The accused include Additional Chief Mechanical Engineer Ahmed Mahbub Chowdhury, Bangladesh Railway Director Mrinal Kanti Banik, Project Director Abdul Matin Chowdhury, and former general managers Md Harun-or-Rashid and Md Mizanur Rahman, along with former director general Shamsuzzaman.
The ACC has accused these officials of conspiring to present the project as feasible without conducting proper feasibility studies or market assessments. Investigators discovered that the project included unrealistic income projections and accounting irregularities, which culminated in a significant financial loss for the state.
