Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has submitted a probe report against Md Shafiqul Islam, also known as Sentu, a councillor of ward number 31 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), alleging that he has acquired wealth beyond his known sources of income. This development was confirmed today by the ACC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Md. Akhtarul Islam.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the investigation officer has recommended filing a case against Shafiqul Islam Sentu based on the findings of the probe. The investigation revealed that Sentu possesses total assets worth approximately TK 66.36 million, while his liabilities amount to TK 23.17 million. After accounting for these liabilities, his net assets stand at TK 43.19 million. Furthermore, his family and other expenditures were calculated at TK 12.01 million, bringing the total of assets and expenditures to TK 55.20 million.

In stark contrast, his legitimate sources of income total TK 29.65 million, resulting in unexplained wealth amounting to TK 25.55 million. This unexplained wealth represents about 46.28 percent of his total assets. The ACC report suggests that as a public representative, Sentu appears to have misused his authority to acquire and benefit from these assets.

In response to these findings, the ACC has sought approval to file a case under section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. The commission intends to form a committee for further investigation into the case before placing the matter before its officials for further action.
