Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former minister Farhad Hossain and his wife Syeda Monalisa Islam on charges of acquiring assets beyond known sources. ACC director general Md Akter Hossain stated that the investigation, led by assistant director Khorshed Alam, uncovered inconsistencies in the wealth of the accused couple.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the investigation report revealed that Farhad Hossain accumulated and possessed assets, both moveable and immovable, worth approximately Tk.2.43 crore. However, evidence was only found for his wealth amounting to around Tk.1.95 crore, suggesting that assets valued at about Tk.1.11 crore were acquired beyond his known income sources. Additionally, the ACC team discovered 12 bank accounts linked to Hossain, through which suspicious transactions totaling around Tk.6.54 crore were made.
The report further highlighted that Syeda Monalisa Islam amassed assets worth around Tk.80 lakh without declaring any legal income source. Akter Hossain confirmed that the ACC has filed charges against Farhad Hossain under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. The case also includes charges under Section 4(2) and 4(3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012.
In addition to the charges against Farhad Hossain, the ACC has also filed a case against his wife, Syeda Monalisa Islam, under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
