Abu sayeed: The central convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), Nahid Islam, has stated that the martyrdom of Abu Sayeed on July 16 last year had a decisive impact on the fall of the dictatorship.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid Islam made these remarks during a press conference after visiting the grave of Abu Sayeed and offering prayers in Babanpur, Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. He recalled the events of July 1, 2024, when the democratic anti-discrimination student movement began, gaining momentum as thousands joined, including Abu Sayeed. His martyrdom on July 16 sparked a mass uprising.
Nahid Islam recounted being at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on the day of Sayeed's death. News of Sayeed, a prominent student of Begum Rokeya University, being shot by police led to widespread mourning and protests across Bangladesh. The immediate response to his death marked a turning point in the movement against the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina.
He emphasized the significance of the ongoing July walkathon, which commenced in Pirganj, where Sayeed is buried. This initiative aims to engage with citizens nationwide, promoting the ideals for which Sayeed sacrificed his life and encouraging participation in the nation-building process.
Nahid Islam reiterated the NCP's commitment to realizing the July Declaration and Charter. He stressed the need for a new constitution and reforms through a Constituent Assembly, urging continuous public engagement to uphold these goals.
NCP member-secretary Akhtar Hossen highlighted the importance of the July walkathon in seeking justice and advocating for a new constitution. He underscored the necessity of holding accountable those responsible for past atrocities in Bangladesh and organizing elections to replace the old governance structure.
The event was attended by various NCP leaders, who expressed their determination to draw inspiration from martyrs like Abu Sayeed in their fight against fascism. They vowed to continue the struggle for justice and reform in Bangladesh.
