Dhaka: BNP Acting Secretary General and Prime Minister's Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today praised veteran journalist Abdus Salam, highlighting his life and struggle as a unique example of independent and objective journalism. Rizvi applauded Salam's unwavering commitment to truth and civil liberties, emphasizing the global need for journalists like him.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizvi made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion commemorating the 116th birth anniversary of Abdus Salam, the founder Director General of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) and founding editor of The Bangladesh Observer. The event, organized by the PIB and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with assistance from the Journalist Abdus Salam Memorial Association, celebrated Salam's significant contributions to journalism and his role in the Language Movement.
Rizvi recounted Salam's academic journey in English literature at the University of Calcutta and Presidency College, his decision to leave a lucrative government job for journalism, and his struggles against authoritarianism. He compared Salam's challenges to those of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, both of whom faced persecution for their opposition to vested interests.
A notable figure during the 1952 Language Movement, Salam supported the recognition of Bangla through his writing, which led to his arrest after being labelled anti-religious. Rizvi also recalled Salam's political career as an elected MP from the United Front and his critical stance against Pakistani President Ayub Khan's policies, which resulted in the shutdown of The Bangladesh Observer and Salam's imprisonment.
Throughout various regimes, Rizvi noted, Salam faced attacks yet remained steadfast in his commitment to independent journalism. His leadership extended beyond journalism, as he became the president of the Editors' Council formed by the two wings of Pakistan, advocating for objectivity and truth.
PIB Director General Faruk Wasif chaired the event, with Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Loton Ekram moderating. Special guests included Information and Broadcasting and Culture Adviser Dr Zahid Ur Rahman and Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator and freedom fighter Abdus Salam, who recognized the veteran journalist's influence as a beacon in the field.
Dr Zahid Ur Rahman emphasized the importance of media freedom for democratic governance, advocating for the acceptance of criticism. DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam praised the journalist's pioneering role at PIB. Kader Gani Chowdhury, Managing Director and Chief Editor of BSS, underscored the necessity of managing the media with patriotism, courage, and wisdom, encouraging current journalists to emulate Salam's example.
The discussion highlighted Salam's enduring legacy and the vital role of independent journalism in upholding truth and justice, reinforcing his position as an inspirational figure for future generations.
