Gaibandha:Nahid Islam, the National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip, has accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of betraying the mass uprising and the verdict of the referendum. Islam made these allegations during an exchange with journalists at the Zila Parishad Hallroom in Gaibandha on Friday morning, ahead of an NCP regional coordination meeting.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid Islam expressed concerns over the BNP's hold on power, stating, "We believe the BNP government is still in power by force. In the past, we have seen many people hold power through force, but they could not remain in power." Islam emphasized that the NCP is actively preparing for the upcoming local government elections.
Nahid Islam further criticized the BNP for allegedly creating disunity in the country, attributing the issue to individuals focused solely on their positions and power. He urged the public to recognize these individuals who, according to him, now speak of national unity but fail to confront the ruling Awami League.
The NCP convener highlighted the actions taken by his party against what he described as the fascist government, contrasting them with the BNP's approach, which he claimed involved rehabilitating the Awami League. He called on the BNP to reconsider its position and criticized its founder, Ziaur Rahman, for allowing the Awami League back into politics.
Nahid also referenced the consequences faced by BNP leaders, such as Tarique Rahman's prolonged stay abroad and Begum Khaleda Zia's imprisonment, as lessons the BNP should heed. Following the journalists' exchange, Nahid participated in a regional coordination meeting to review progress and plan for the elections.
