Chattogram:Secretary General of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Mohammed Kader Gani Chowdhury expressed concerns over the media's role in supporting a fascist regime over the past 17 years, which he said has resulted in a significant loss of public trust in journalism.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chowdhury highlighted that the practice of 'subservient journalism' during this period has not only extended the lifespan of the oppressive regime but also severely damaged the integrity of the journalistic profession. He emphasized that journalists who compromised public trust for political gain have been discredited and some have even left the country out of shame.
Chowdhury made these remarks at a views-exchange meeting entitled 'What should be done for journalists' welfare', held at the Chattogram Press Club. The event was attended by State Minister for Land and CHT Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin as the chief guest and presided over by Chattogram's Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah.
The BSS Chief Editor stressed that journalism should be regarded as a mission to uncover and assert the truth, rather than a profit-oriented business. He criticized the absence of truthful reporting on sensitive topics like enforced disappearances and secret detention centers, which were ignored by local media despite being covered by international outlets.
In his speech, Chowdhury also called for the establishment of the 10th Wage Board for journalists, emphasizing the need for fair compensation across all media sectors, including provisions for journalists working outside the capital. He urged for the repeal of restrictive laws enacted by the previous government to safeguard press freedom.
The event, moderated by CMUJ General Secretary Saleh Noman, included speeches from various journalists and media leaders, advocating for the welfare and development of journalism in Bangladesh.
