Dhaka:Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has emphasized the necessity of an integrated and technology-driven border management system to foster economic growth and ensure national security in Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted that Bangladesh's connectivity with the global community is stronger than ever, and the government is diligently working towards developing a technology-driven, internationally compliant immigration system. This system aims to facilitate international travel and trade while addressing cross-border security threats.
The minister spoke at a briefing session titled “IOM Strategic Framework for Immigration and Border Governance in Bangladesh (2027-2031)” organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. He noted that effective border management must balance national security with the facilitation of legitimate travel and trade, referencing the National Integrated Border Management Strategy 2026-2031 and the Five-Year Strategic Framework for Reform and Development 2026-2031. Key priorities identified include digital transformation, responsible AI use, paperless processes, and improved interoperability of government services.
The Home Minister stressed the significant role of the Special Branch (SB) of Bangladesh Police in immigration management and advocated for enhanced operational capabilities at various checkpoints through sound policies and modern technology. He underscored that border management should uphold human rights and maintain professional standards, not just focus on technological advancements.
Inter-ministerial coordination was also highlighted as essential in combating transnational crime, human trafficking, and irregular migration. The minister noted that border management requires the coordinated efforts of multiple government entities and law enforcement agencies. He welcomed the IOM's proposed Strategic Framework for 2027-2031 and called for increased technical and financial support from development partners to strengthen Bangladesh's border security and contribute to regional stability.
Dr. Laura Tomm Bonde, Chief of Mission of IOM Bangladesh, acknowledged Bangladesh's progress in strengthening immigration and border management capacities. She emphasized the need for effective systems, skilled personnel, and better coordination among agencies due to evolving travel patterns and operational requirements. The proposed strategic framework outlines potential cooperation areas, including integrated border management, digital systems, capacity development, and infrastructure improvements.
