Dhaka:Clashes erupted between police and garment workers in Mirpur as demonstrations for higher wages entered their fourth day, causing significant disruption in the area on Tuesday.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the unrest led to a temporary suspension of passenger services at the Mirpur-11 Metro Rail Station for nearly two hours as a safety measure. Metro operations resumed at 1215 pm after the situation stabilized.

The demonstration began around 9 am when workers from various garment factories blocked roads in the Mirpur-11 area. The situation escalated when police attempted to disperse the protesters, leading to violent clashes involving brickbats, sound grenades, and tear gas. The resulting road blockade severely affected traffic between Mirpur-12 and Mirpur-10, leaving many commuters, including schoolchildren, stranded.

Deputy Commissioner Md Touhidul Arif of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Public Order Management South Division stated that some individuals involved in the protest were not genuine garment workers but miscreants with ulterior motives. He assured that investigations would identify those responsible for the unrest and that legal actions would follow. Despite the turmoil, the situation normalized around noon, with continued police surveillance to prevent further incidents.
