Dhaka:A land surveyor was sentenced to jail after being caught accepting a bribe at the office of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Lalbagh Revenue Circle in Dhaka. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested Md. Asadul Islam as he received Tk 1 lakh in bribe money.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the detention order was issued by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zashita Islam following an application by the ACC. Assistant Director Md. Mahabub Morshed presented Asadul Islam in court and requested his detention, which was approved.

The ACC's application revealed that Asadul Islam was apprehended in a trap operation after a complaint that he demanded a Tk 1 lakh bribe from a service seeker. The operation unfolded around 11 am on Tuesday when the complainant gave the money to Asadul Islam in his office. The ACC team, positioned nearby, arrested him upon receiving the bribe.

During questioning, Asadul Islam admitted to accepting the bribe, and the ACC team recovered the money from a drawer. The serial numbers on the notes matched those provided to the complainant earlier. Subsequently, a case was filed against him under relevant sections of the Penal Code and the Anti-Corruption Act, 1947.

The ACC detailed that retired army soldier Md. Monirul Islam had sought land demarcation services from the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner's office, which involved separating government and private land portions. Despite multiple follow-ups, the land survey work was stalled, leading to Asadul Islam demanding a Tk 80 lakh bribe to complete the task. This led to the ACC's trap operation, resulting in his arrest.
