Dhaka:A letter is set to be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs to execute a court verdict ordering the confiscation of assets belonging to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. This decision follows their sentencing to death for crimes against humanity related to the July 2024 mass uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Md Aminul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, stated that the letter will be dispatched today to implement the tribunal's order. The letter, addressed to the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasizes the need to enforce the November 17, 2025, tribunal decision, which mandates the seizure of all assets owned by Sheikh Hasina. These assets are to be distributed as compensation to families of individuals martyred during the 2024 uprising and other victims.
The letter warns that failure to immediately bring the fugitive convict's assets under government control could allow her to enjoy, sell, or transfer them, undermining the tribunal's confiscation order. The ministry is urged to compile a comprehensive list of all movable and immovable assets of Sheikh Hasina, ensure they are brought under state control, and distribute them According to tribunal's directive.
The same tribunal verdict also sentenced former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun to five years in prison. The judgment, delivered by a panel led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, not only targets Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal but also orders the confiscation of their assets to compensate the families of the martyrs and the injured.
In related cases, other political figures, including Obaidul Quader and Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, have also been sentenced to death or life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the 2024 mass uprising. The tribunal has ordered the confiscation of half of the assets of several convicts, with proceeds intended for compensation through the July Foundation or similar organizations.
