Dhaka:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today emphasized that the electricity crisis in Bangladesh can be effectively addressed through affordable solar energy and other cost-effective measures, rather than relying on quick-rental power plants. He announced the government's plan to add 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of solar power to the national grid before the next summer season.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the prime minister made these remarks while inaugurating the two-day Bangladesh Solar Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital. He highlighted the government's awareness of public concerns over the energy situation and outlined comprehensive measures for long-term energy security.

The government's strategy includes stabilizing energy supplies, reviewing power sector expenditures and contracts, intensifying gas exploration, diversifying energy sources, and accelerating the expansion of solar power. The government has set targets to generate 20 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. An initial fund of Tk 1,500 crore has been allocated to support solar power financing, with plans to arrange further funding over time.

To facilitate solar power growth, the government has introduced the 'Special Solar Power Installation Ordinance 2026', offering policy support, tax and tariff benefits, and financial incentives. The net metering system will allow the purchase of surplus electricity supplied to the grid at Tk 10.50 per unit from February 2027.

Efforts are also underway to convert electricity-powered irrigation pumps to solar power, reducing costs for farmers and conserving electricity. The government provided Tk 43,000 crore in power sector subsidies for the 2025-26 fiscal year, increased diesel reserves, and allocated Tk 600 crore for fuel oil procurement to ensure stable power generation.

The expo, organized by the Power Division, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, and Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), showcases modern solar technologies and promotes investment opportunities in the sector. The event aims to support the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy (2026-2030) and familiarize stakeholders with government policies.

The prime minister urged citizens to maximize natural light usage and turn off unnecessary electronic devices. He also shared his experience with solar panels at his residence and called on solar service providers to maintain quality service and regular communication with entrepreneurs.

The event included prize distribution for the 'Sphuran In Search of Sustainable Energy Innovation 2026' competition. It was attended by key government figures, including the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, State Minister, and Finance Secretary, among others.
