Antalya:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to attend the World Leaders' Summit at COP31 in Türkiye, focusing on pressing for grant-based climate financing and increased accountability from major carbon-emitting nations. The high-level session, which will be part of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, will be held at the Antalya Expo Center from November 11 to 12.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam emphasized the importance of Bangladesh's participation at the summit. She noted that Bangladesh would highlight its achievements in climate resilience and adaptation, while urging developed countries to fulfill their responsibilities towards climate-vulnerable nations. The minister stressed that Bangladesh would advocate for climate financing through grants instead of loans, arguing against burdening countries with minimal greenhouse gas emissions with additional debt.
The state minister also stated that Bangladesh would emphasize the need for major carbon-emitting countries to be held accountable for their commitments under international climate agreements. Prime Minister Rahman is expected to present environmental and climate-related initiatives undertaken by the BNP-led government, such as canal excavation, tree plantation programs, and the promotion of renewable energy sources like solar power.
Furthermore, Shama mentioned that Bangladesh would showcase how its population is adapting to climate change, particularly in the South Asian and broader Asian contexts. The government plans to hold a formal press briefing to provide detailed information about the Prime Minister's travel schedule, delegation composition, and Bangladesh's negotiating position prior to the visit.
The summit aims to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement, strengthen climate adaptation, and mobilize financing for vulnerable countries. As one of the nations most vulnerable to climate change, Bangladesh has consistently advocated for predictable and accessible international climate financing, particularly for adaptation, disaster preparedness, and addressing climate-induced loss and damage. The event will bring together global leaders to reinforce political commitments and foster international cooperation in combating the climate crisis, with Türkiye hosting and presiding over COP31 while Australia chairs the negotiations.
