Dhaka:A 26-foot-wide road is being constructed in the Ghuntighar area of Gandaria in the capital following the eviction of drug dens. The removal of illegal structures along the railway line is progressing rapidly, according to Dhaka-6 MP Ishraque Hossain.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Ishraque expressed hope that the new road would ease movement for local residents and assist law enforcement agencies in strengthening patrols to control drug-related activities in the area. He made these remarks while speaking to reporters after visiting Ghuntighar in Gandaria.

Ishraque detailed that drug dens had developed across nearly 2.5 kilometers along the railway line, where illegal structures had been built. The eviction drive commenced in the Shyampur section, and two weeks of activities have nearly cleared the way for the road's construction, with only a few structures remaining. These remaining structures are mostly illegal and temporary.

Once completed, the road is expected to open up connecting routes to different neighborhoods, facilitating the movement of residents and the entry and exit of ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Plans also include installing streetlights and CCTV cameras to make regular patrols by law enforcement agencies easier and help curb drug-related activities.

Ishraque reiterated his commitment to continuing the anti-drug drive, emphasizing that the initiative would benefit residents of the wider Gandaria area under his constituency. He highlighted the presence of several important educational institutions in the area, noting that drug-related activities had been spreading and affecting nearby residential neighborhoods.

The MP stressed that the dismantling of drug spots across his constituency would occur in phases, with cooperation from residents, public representatives, and law enforcement agencies. He reaffirmed that the fight against drugs would continue beyond a single eviction drive.

Ishraque also mentioned that State Minister for Railways and Dhaka-9 MP Habibur Rahman Habib was assisting with the road construction work. The visit was attended by Dhaka South City BNP Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, the Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Wari zone, officers-in-charge of Gandaria and Shyampur police stations, and other concerned officials.
