Dhaka:The Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a protest today, demanding a new investigation into alleged attacks on students during the 2024 July Uprising. The group submitted a memorandum to the university's vice-chancellor, seeking accountability for the involvement of teachers, officers, and employees in these incidents.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, around a hundred leaders and activists of the organisation initiated a procession from the university's Central Shaheed Minar at approximately 400 pm. The procession moved through Murad Chattar and concluded in front of the new administrative building. During the event, participants voiced demands for action against those implicated in the attacks, including members of the then ruling party's student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League.
At a rally, JU Chhatra Dal Convener Jahir Uddin Mohammad Babor criticized the university administration's failure to deliver justice for the attacks on students. He called for the removal of accused employees and a thorough investigation of their roles in the events. Following the rally, a JCD delegation presented a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Nurul Islam, urging a fresh probe into the alleged misconduct.
The memorandum emphasized the need for justice against individuals directly or indirectly involved in the attacks or those who supported the attackers. It further requested that the accused be excluded from university policymaking bodies and that supporters and protectors of the attackers be removed from various offices, including the security department.
Upon receiving the memorandum, the vice-chancellor noted that a decision had been made by the prior administration at a Syndicate meeting, but the current administration has yet to obtain the meeting's proceedings. He assured that the administration would review the matter and consider suitable actions once the signed documents are received from the outgoing vice-chancellor.
