Jhenaidah:Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued a stern warning to the government, indicating that the party and its allies may shift to a one-point demand if their seven-point charter is not accepted.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Dr. Shafiqur addressed a rally organized by the 11-party alliance at Chuadanga Bus Stand in Jhenaidah town, emphasizing that the current demands reflect the people's will and were initially intended to be resolved through parliamentary means.
The alliance's seven-point demands include the implementation of the 'people's verdict' from the February 12 referendum, the trial of the July 2024 mass killings, resolving the energy and fertilizer crisis, controlling the soaring prices of essential commodities, ending corruption, extortion, and violence, improving law and order, and eliminating narrow partisanship in government contracts and hirings.
Dr. Shafiqur accused the government of betraying the referendum's mandate, which he claimed represents the wishes of 70 percent of the populace. He asserted that the government has failed to prevent the excessive rise in prices of essential commodities, which was a commitment they had made.
He further stated that the people had not fought merely to replace one political party with another but for fundamental changes to the political and state systems. He warned that if the referendum is deemed illegitimate, then both the government and the opposition are equally invalid.
Dr. Shafiqur expressed the alliance's desire for peace and stability but maintained that they would not remain silent if people's rights were denied. He argued that implementing the referendum's mandate and reforming state institutions would foster a political environment free from extortion, land grabbing, corruption, terrorism, and violence.
He concluded by stating that accepting the seven-point charter would negate the need for a one-point demand, such as the government's resignation, and pledged to restore people's rights without yielding to injustice.
