Dhaka:NRB World, a global network for Bangladeshi expatriates, is mobilizing its resources to attract foreign investment by leveraging a government incentive that offers a 1.5 percent commission for investments brought into the country.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mohd Shahiduzzaman, president of NRB World, highlighted that the incentive is designed to encourage expatriates to utilize their international business connections to bring foreign investors to Bangladesh, thereby creating employment opportunities. This announcement was made at a press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club.
NRB World operates as a non-profit, non-political organization, connecting Bangladeshis across more than 50 countries. The organization plans to host the 'NRB World Summit-2026' on December 28-29 at the Sheraton hotel. This event aims to gather around 1,000 expatriate Bangladeshis from various nations to explore investment opportunities and strengthen economic ties with Bangladesh.
In a parliamentary session on June 10, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman declared the government's offer of a 1.5 percent commission under the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Incentive Scheme, 2026. Shahiduzzaman stated that this initiative could assist expatriates in covering costs for facilitating investor visits and establishing business connections in Bangladesh.
The government has pledged support for NRB World through the Invest Bangladesh initiative, including assistance with investment procedures like company formation. Additionally, tax-holiday facilities and mechanisms for transferring investment profits abroad via Bangladesh Bank are expected to attract more foreign investors.
Shahiduzzaman emphasized NRB World's role as a conduit between overseas investors and Bangladesh, aiming to harness expatriates' expertise and international connections for economic growth. He also advocated for a dedicated identification system for non-resident Bangladeshis, proposing unique identification numbers and inclusion in databases managed by the foreign and home ministries.
The organization has repeatedly requested such measures to facilitate expatriates' access to government benefits, including tax rebates and remittance incentives. Shahiduzzaman urged the government to implement practical measures to address the challenges faced by expatriates both domestically and internationally.
