Dhaka:The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) is set to amend a controversial illustration in the Grade Six Information and Communication Technology (ICT) textbook for the 2027 academic year. This initiative involves changing the image of a weighing scale, used as a wisdom symbol, in the pyramid of knowledge. The correction process will involve revising and reprinting specific pages of approximately 38 lakh ICT textbooks, with no additional cost to the government.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, NCTB Chairman Professor Mohammed Fakhrul Mawla disclosed in an exclusive interview that the revision will include books already distributed and those stored in warehouses. The corrected textbooks are expected to be delivered to upazila-level distribution centres by November 30.

The chairman emphasized that the government will not incur any financial liability for this correction process. The printing press owners have agreed to cover the entire cost of revising and reprinting the textbooks. This follows an emergency meeting held with relevant parties to address the issue promptly.

A committee has been formed to investigate how the error occurred, with the investigation already underway. Departmental actions will be taken against those responsible once the report is received. The chairman also addressed concerns over the use of political symbols in textbooks, noting that while factual and theoretical revisions were made this year, illustrations remained unchanged.

Progress on printing textbooks for the new academic year is advancing rapidly, with nearly complete printing and binding for pre-primary and primary levels. The NCTB aims to ensure quality-assured, error-free textbooks reach students by the end of November, facilitating a smooth start to the academic year.
