Dhaka:Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam has declared a firm stance against the illegal occupation of roads and footpaths by hawkers, emphasizing that such activities will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Salam made these remarks during two eviction drives conducted from Gulistan Zero Point to Dhaka Trade Centre on Thursday. The operations, held at 1100 am and 330 pm, involved the eviction of illegal shops and the seizure of goods, resulting in the clearance of the entire road and footpath stretch from illegal occupation.

In response to journalists' inquiries about the persistent return of hawkers to these areas, Salam stated that eviction drives would continue as necessary to protect the interests of city dwellers. He highlighted that all possible measures, including discussions, requests, and warnings, have already been taken. He warned that future illegal setups would lead to the seizure of goods and possible legal actions, including arrests.

Salam addressed accusations regarding the lack of rehabilitation for evicted hawkers, urging media professionals to refrain from asking questions that could encourage illegal occupation. He requested the media to support public opinion in alignment with the desires of Dhaka's residents and the broader public demand.

He clarified that while a limited number of hawkers might be allowed to operate in designated areas without obstructing public movement, the majority would need to return to their respective districts. Salam stressed the necessity of saving Dhaka from such illegal activities, stating there was no alternative.

Many pedestrians expressed their satisfaction and support for the eviction drives, thanking the DSCC administrator and calling for the continuation of such operations.
