Zinzira:A nearly 400-year-old pigeon market in Zinzira of Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital, continues to attract bird lovers and traders, preserving a tradition that dates back to the Mughal era.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the market is traditionally held twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. However, it has gradually expanded beyond its scheduled days, with several permanent bird shops now operating in the surrounding area throughout the week.
The market offers a wide variety of pigeons, featuring local breeds such as Jalali, Gola, and Giribaz, as well as foreign varieties popular among hobbyists, including King, Fantail (Mayurpankhi), Jacobin, and Homer. Prices vary depending on the breed, color, and distinctive features of the birds, with demand differing from one variety to another.
Over the years, the market has developed into a center for pigeon breeding, trading, and care, providing a source of livelihood for many people. Despite changes in its trading pattern over time, the nearly four-century-old market continues to thrive, sustained by the interest of pigeon enthusiasts and traders.
