Dhaka:State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. MA Muhit today emphasized the need for young doctors and medical students to explore careers beyond traditional pathways. He advocated for a more open approach that allows these individuals to utilize their talents and dreams without being confined to specific molds.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Muhit made these remarks as the chief guest at the 15th Medical Biochemistry Conference held at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka. The event was organized by the Bangladesh Society of Medical Biochemists, with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister SM Ziauddin Hyder also speaking as a special guest.

Dr. Muhit encouraged young doctors to aim for global recognition as researchers, noting the ongoing revolutionary changes in medical science, especially in molecular biology and genetics. He highlighted the potential for research in developing countries, as data from these regions is often underrepresented in global initiatives like the Human Genome Project.

The minister expressed confidence in the ability of Bangladeshi doctors to become world-class researchers with the right support and guidance. He cited Professor Liaquat Ali as an example of someone who achieved international acclaim through dedication and vision, despite limited institutional backing.

Dr. Muhit also addressed challenges in the medical biochemistry sector, noting government measures to tackle the shortage of teachers in medical colleges. He mentioned discussions on bringing back experienced retired teachers and offering special incentives to them, along with the success of a policy decision made in 2000 that significantly increased the number of postgraduates in medical biochemistry.

During the event, Ziauddin Hyder underscored the importance of strengthening medical education, nursing, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostic services as crucial components for delivering modern healthcare. He pointed out the imbalance in the number of medical doctors and specialists, particularly the shortage of specialists in basic disciplines like physiology and biochemistry.

Other notable speakers at the conference included Professor Dr. Nazmul Hosain, Additional Director General Professor Dr. Foara Tasmim, President of the Bangladesh Society of Medical Biochemists Professor Major General (Retd) Dr. Debashish Saha, and Secretary General Dr. Syeda Shahina Sobhan.
