Dhaka:The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is set to launch the sale of packaged turmeric powder, chili powder, and tea starting in November. This move is part of TCB's strategy to broaden its product range, boost income, and reduce reliance on government subsidies.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Foyshol Azad stated that the corporation is expanding its commercial product offerings to provide more household necessities at affordable prices while strengthening its financial position. The introduction of these new products aims to help TCB become financially self-reliant within four to five years by increasing revenue from commercial activities.
Currently, TCB reaches approximately 50 lakh customers each month with its products and aims to increase this number to 70-80 lakh during the current fiscal year, eventually reaching one crore in the next fiscal year. The introduction of packaged spices and tea is expected to enhance TCB's commercial operations, supporting its long-term goal of financial independence.
Azad emphasized that this expansion would not affect the prices of existing subsidized commodities, which will continue to be sold at current rates. The new products, like those already introduced, will be priced below prevailing market prices, allowing consumers to save money on their regular grocery purchases from TCB outlets.
Additionally, TCB is exploring ways to sell essential commodities, such as edible oil, pulses, and sugar, outside its smart-card-based distribution program. A pilot initiative for edible oil is underway, and TCB has invited applications from prospective dealers for this planned sales program.
