Tokyo:Dhaka Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned home early today following a four-day official visit to Japan aimed at enhancing bilateral relations, increasing investment, and expanding trade and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying the Prime Minister, his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and members of his entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 248 am. The flight had departed from Narita International Airport in Tokyo at 1055 pm local time on October 29.

During the visit, Prime Minister Rahman engaged in high-level talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, focusing on strengthening longstanding partnerships in areas such as trade, investment, energy security, infrastructure, technology, and regional and international affairs. The discussions included a proposed private investment of one trillion Japanese yen (US$6.3 billion) in Bangladesh's energy, infrastructure, and ICT sectors, with plans for a Japanese team to visit Bangladesh to expedite the investment plan.

Bangladesh secured pledges for two yen-loan projects worth approximately 46.56 billion yen (US$295.5 million) and signed six bilateral cooperation instruments. These included a 2.12 billion yen (US$13.44 million) grant agreement for a patrol vessel to enhance coastal security and memorandums on business environment improvements, agriculture, and climate change cooperation.

Prime Minister Rahman also addressed the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Forum Dialogue at the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), encouraging Japanese investment in areas such as automotive manufacturing, energy, technology, and logistics. Meetings with political leaders and business executives, including JICA President Dr. Akihiko Tanaka and JETRO President Susumu Kataoka, further explored opportunities for investment and technology transfer.

The visit also featured tours of key industrial and energy facilities, including JERA's LNG terminal and power plant, and Toyota's Motomachi factory, as the two nations aim to expand economic engagement following their Economic Partnership Agreement signed in February 2026.
