Dhaka:West Indies opener John Campbell has emphasized the need for substantial partnerships in the opening Test against Bangladesh, stating that the game remains evenly balanced. Campbell, who notched a half-century in the first innings, highlighted the significance of regaining control in the contest at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Campbell noted that after dismissing Bangladesh for 272, the West Indies momentarily held the upper hand. However, Bangladesh fought back, capturing wickets swiftly by the end of Day 2. "At the moment, I think it's a pretty even game. If we can get one or two more big partnerships, then we'll be in the lead tomorrow," Campbell remarked.
The West Indies had a promising start with the ball, taking seven Bangladesh wickets in the morning session after the hosts resumed at 213-3. Nevertheless, Bangladesh's spinners responded effectively, reducing the West Indies to 134-4 by taking three wickets in the final session.
Campbell mentioned that a rain delay, lasting over an hour, disrupted the visitors' momentum, allowing Bangladesh to regroup and bowl with improved precision. Despite this, he expressed confidence in the West Indies' batting depth, suggesting that with a few key partnerships, they could establish a significant lead.
He explained his strategy at the crease involved maintaining a positive outlook while being selective with his shots, especially given the inconsistent bounce of the Mirpur pitch. Campbell also commended the West Indies' bowlers for their disciplined performance, which challenged the Bangladeshi batsmen effectively with consistent line and length.
