Dhaka:A court today ordered the freezing of 27 bank accounts belonging to former Naogaon-3 lawmaker Md Salim Uddin Tarafder and his wife, Shamima Akter Shirin, following allegations of corruption.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir, who approved a request made by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC's application claimed that Shamima Akter Shirin, along with her husband, amassed assets valued at Taka 1.68 crore, which were disproportionate to their known sources of income. It further accused Tarafder of abusing his power as a public servant, using influence and financial aid for dishonest purposes, thus violating Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Penal Code.
The application also highlighted the possibility that the accused were attempting to move or dispose of the assets in their bank accounts, which could potentially obstruct the ongoing investigation if done before the case's resolution.
