Dhaka:Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has announced the government's intention to enhance public trust in the country's judiciary. The focus is on reinforcing confidence in justice delivery and restoring a trustworthy environment.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted the challenge of clearing over 46 lakh pending cases with only 2,300 judges. He emphasized the need for judicial activism and the strategic deployment of proactive judges in districts burdened with heavy caseloads to expedite proceedings.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new E-Family Court and the country's first E-Family Appeal Court, Asaduzzaman noted reports of courts operating only two to three hours daily and some judges starting late and finishing early. He mentioned plans to offer judicial officers seeking comfortable roles the opportunity to work in less demanding locations.
The minister also discussed the potential for young judicial officers to advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the judiciary. He invited journalists to report any court irregularities or suggest improvements, assuring them of a warm reception for their feedback.
Additionally, Asaduzzaman addressed plans to digitize court processes, including the remote appearance of accused persons, which would reduce the logistical burden of transporting them to court. The International Crimes Tribunal has already piloted a digital attendance system, allowing remote observation of prisoners.
The minister mentioned ongoing consultations with various sectors to incorporate feedback into the Human Rights Commission Act and laws on enforced disappearances. He also referred to amendments to the Cyber Security Act, emphasizing the importance of public consultation due to its impact on freedom of expression.
The event was attended by Law and Justice Division Secretary Liaquet Ali Molla, Supreme Court Registrar General Mohammad Habibur Rahman Siddiquee, Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Md Rafikul Islam, and Dhaka Bar Association President Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan, among others.
