Dhaka:A German icon has found a distinctly Bengali voice in Dhaka, as the Buddy Bear sculpture at the German Embassy has been transformed with vibrant colors and intricate motifs inspired by Bangladesh's rickshaw painting tradition. Repainted by local artists Rasel Rana and Miraj Hossain, the sculpture serves as a striking visual celebration of friendship between Germany and Bangladesh.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the Buddy Bear project, originally conceived by Klaus and Eva Herlitz in Berlin in 2001, aims to champion peace, tolerance, and international understanding. Each bear is designed to reflect the cultural heritage of its host country, and in Dhaka, this is achieved through the bold palettes and decorative motifs typical of rickshaw painting.

The German Embassy in Dhaka hosted a design competition earlier this year, inviting local artists to propose a Bangladeshi interpretation of the sculpture. The winning concept by artist Rafiur Suny provided the blueprint for the transformation carried out by lead artist Rasel Rana and co-artist Miraj Hossain. The bear's raised arms are adorned with the national colors of Germany and Bangladesh, symbolizing mutual respect and enduring friendship.

The artists faced technical challenges in transforming the three-dimensional sculpture, including stripping the old paint and adapting their skills to work on the curved surface. They also stress-tested acrylic paints to withstand Bangladesh's tropical climate, concluding with a protective varnish to ensure the artwork's longevity.

The bear's facade pays homage to Bangladesh's natural landscape, featuring a peacock, the Oriental magpie-robin, and water lilies. The reverse side depicts riverine life with traditional wooden boats, native fish, and rural homes. This artistic endeavor not only celebrates local culture but also elevates Bangladesh's rich folk art to an international platform.

For artists Rana and Hossain, the project was an inspiring experiment in medium and scale, demonstrating how diplomacy can flourish through shared creative expressions. The Buddy Bear in Dhaka stands as a testament to the power of art to transcend borders and foster friendship.
