Magura:A court in Magura has ordered the imprisonment of former Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Biplob Kumar Nath and Sub-Inspector (SI) Ismail Hossain. They have been detained in connection with the murder of Moshiar Rahman, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to United News of Bangladesh, Judge Barnali Rani of the Shalikha Cognizance Court denied their bail requests and mandated their incarceration. The arrest occurred on Tuesday night as the two officers were serving with the Barishal River Police, as confirmed by Magura Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain.
Police Inspector Md Kamruzzaman, leading the investigation, stated that Moshiar Rahman, who served as vice-president of the ward-level BNP in Shatkhali Union of Shalikha upazila, was forcibly taken from his home on February 15, 2015. It is alleged that the then OC of Shalikha Police Station, Biplob Kumar Nath, along with SI Ismail Hossain, subsequently shot and killed him. The incident was later depicted as a crossfire by the police, who filed a case against Moshiar himself.
The widow of the deceased, Hasina Begum, expressed that she was unable to file a case during the Awami League's tenure in government. However, she filed a murder case on October 1, 2024, after the government's fall, naming several individuals, including the two officers. The court subsequently directed Shalikha Police Station to officially register the case.
Further allegations against Biplob Kumar Nath and Ismail Hossain include the killing of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists in purported crossfire incidents across various regions, including Jhenaidah and Magura, among others. Additionally, Biplob Kumar Nath faces accusations of extorting significant sums from BNP and Jamaat leaders under the threat of crossfire. He is also identified as the son-in-law of Mohit Kumar Nath, president of Jashore Sadar Upazila Awami League, and reportedly owns a residence near Bejpara Puja Mandir in Jashore city.
