Dhaka:The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has called for stringent measures against LPG operators, distributors, and retailers who are overcharging consumers. This demand includes the potential cancellation of licenses for those found guilty and steps to ensure liquefied petroleum gas is sold at government-regulated prices.

According to United News of Bangladesh, CAB has urged authorities to probe claims of artificial shortages, hoarding, and overcharging, taking decisive action against those involved. This call to action comes as the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) prepares for a public hearing on LPG price revisions scheduled for Thursday, which will address both state-run and private operators.

In a letter dated October 26, CAB President AHM Safiquzzaman addressed the BERC chairman, highlighting concerns over potential price increases without supply assurances at fixed rates, which could burden low- and middle-income families. The letter referenced an October 4 price hike, noting a 12-kg LPG cylinder's cost increased by Tk 252 to Tk 1,837, yet consumers reportedly pay Tk 500-600 above this fixed rate.

CAB emphasized that enforcing the current price should be prioritized, as LPG is a vital cooking fuel for households without piped gas. The association stressed verifying importers' claimed higher costs against genuine documents and audited accounts, as local distribution costs do not rise proportionately with international LPG prices. CAB urged that any proposal to raise charges should be supported by audited accounts, excluding unjustified expenses.

CAB also demanded transparency in publishing separate accounts of import, storage, bottling, and distribution costs, ensuring any cost reduction benefits consumers. It called for an assessment of state-run LPG costs to guarantee affordable access, alongside displaying updated price lists at sales outlets and issuing receipts. Furthermore, CAB advocated for an easy complaint system for issues like overcharging or cylinder non-availability, ensuring timely redress.

The organization asked BERC to consider consumer experiences and provide clarity on accepted or rejected expenses and objections resolved in the final decision.
