Thakurgaon:Voting in the by-election for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency is scheduled for Thursday, with the Election Commission (EC) finalizing preparations to ensure a free and fair election process. Election materials, including ballot boxes, have been distributed to polling centers under stringent security measures.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, which became vacant following the election of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as President, comprises a total of 516,138 registered voters. The election will take place across 185 polling centers, accommodating 989 booths, with five candidates vying for victory.
Among the candidates, BNP's Mirza Faisal Amin is running under the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Md Delwar Hossain is contesting with the 'Scales' symbol. Other candidates include Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Hafez Dr Md Khademul Islam with the 'Hand Fan,' Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan's Md Abdul Alim Nizami with the 'Banyan Tree,' and Bangladesh Congress's Hussain Muhammad Omar Faruk with the 'Coconut' symbol.
Although the Awami League is not formally participating in the election, its support base remains a significant factor in the constituency. Political observers note that the decisions of Awami League supporters, whether to vote for a particular candidate or abstain, could be decisive in the election's outcome.
The approximately 1,40,000 Hindu voters in the area are also considered crucial in determining the election result, as candidates vie for their support to potentially swing the margin of victory.
Returning Officer Md Kamrul Islam confirmed the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at every polling center to guarantee fair and peaceful voting. Additionally, 5,300 law enforcement personnel, along with magistrates, have been deployed to maintain order and ensure voter safety.
Kamrul emphasized that all necessary security measures have been implemented to allow voters to exercise their rights without fear or hindrance. Voters have expressed optimism for a free, fair, and peaceful election environment, enabling them to cast their votes without intimidation or coercion.
To further ensure the election's integrity, the district administration has prohibited outsiders from remaining in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency from 800 a.m. on October 27 to 400 p.m. on October 30.
