Rajbari:National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam declared on Wednesday that the Awami League's political influence in Bangladesh had concluded following the mass uprising.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Nahid emphasized that the Awami League, described as fascist, was defeated on August 5 due to the sacrifices made by the people, including students and youth, who fought against fascism. He further claimed that recent activities of the Awami League were influenced by diplomatic efforts from a neighboring country aiming to exert pressure on Bangladesh.

Nahid made these statements during a discussion with journalists at the Rajbari Pourashava auditorium, preceding a meeting with party leaders and activists from five districts in the Faridpur region regarding the upcoming local government elections. He asserted that the ideological struggle against the Awami League would persist, targeting what he termed as remnants of fascism, authoritarianism, and corruption.

Expressing skepticism about the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections, Nahid alleged that internal conflicts within the ruling party had resulted in numerous casualties. He criticized the politicization of the Election Commission and police administration, which he argued complicates the possibility of fair elections. Nahid mentioned that the 11-party alliance intends to propose specific measures to the Election Commission to facilitate fair local government elections.

Addressing comments made by the Inspector General of Police about journalists, Nahid stated that journalists fulfill their responsibilities by disseminating accurate information and that legal recourse is available for addressing inaccuracies. He advised police and officials against making derogatory comments about journalists.

Additionally, Nahid accused police, administration officials, and political figures of involvement in drug syndicates, stressing the need to dismantle these networks and ensure accountability to eradicate the crime.

The meeting, organized by the NCP's Rajbari district unit, included leaders and activists from Faridpur, Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Shariatpur districts. NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Sarjis Alam, who also addressed the meeting, described the party's efforts to establish coordination meetings and form convening committees across 4,600 unions by November 30. He alleged that the ruling party was hindering the NCP's organizational activities in various regions.

The event was attended by NCP Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb, Organising Secretary Abdullah Mohammad Hossain, Assistant Organising Secretary for Dhaka Division (South) Hasibur Rahman Apu, and Publicity and Publications Secretary Syed Jamil as special guests.
