Dhaka:Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury today unveiled plans for a multi-day festival dedicated to the Bhawaiya songs of the late, renowned folk singer Abbasuddin Ahmed, in honor of his 125th birth anniversary. The announcement was made during an anniversary event at the National Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segunbagicha.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the festival will feature artists from various regions of the country, celebrating the timeless music of Abbasuddin. The minister emphasized the importance of hosting a festival rather than just a birthday celebration, aiming to highlight Abbasuddin Ahmed's Bhawaiya songs.

Further plans were discussed by the minister, including initiatives to revive Baul, Lalon, and Hasan festivals, with a focus on presenting Jatra and circus performances in innovative formats. These efforts are intended to encourage family participation in cultural events. Additionally, coordinated efforts with relevant ministries aim to broaden cultural activities across the nation.

The event, organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs' patronage, was chaired by Harun-or-Rashid, joint secretary of the ministry and director general (additional charge) of the academy. Cultural Affairs Secretary Yasmin Begum served as the special guest, and Professor Dr. Nashid Kamal, a researcher and singer, delivered the keynote address.

Harun-or-Rashid remarked on Abbasuddin's role in bringing the emotions and lifestyle of rural communities to broader audiences through music, ensuring Bhawaiya's enduring presence among Bangla-speaking people. He also noted the singer's efforts in popularizing Nazrul's Islamic songs.

The program featured performances of Abbasuddin's popular songs by artists such as Rezaul Karim Limon, Rahat Ara Geeti, Nosheen Laila, and Salauddin Ahmed, alongside Nashid Kamal's rendition of the iconic "Oki Gariyal Bhai." The Abbasuddin Sangeet Academy artists concluded the event with group performances, celebrating the singer's lasting musical legacy and promoting Bangla folk heritage among younger generations.
