Chattogram:In a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions, the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has entered into an agreement with Greener Perpetual Initiatives Limited (GGI) to establish an 8.42 Megawatt-peak (MWp) rooftop solar power plant. This project aims to convert unused rooftop spaces of various port administrative buildings and cargo sheds into a source of eco-friendly clean energy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the agreement, signed on October 19, 2026, outlines that GGI will provide solar electricity to Chattogram Port for 20 years. The project is designed under an Operating Expense (OPEX) model, meaning GGI will handle financing, designing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the solar facility. This allows the port authority to enhance its renewable energy capacity without any upfront capital investment.

The agreement sets the solar power price at a maximum of Tk 10.50 per unit, as per the government's ceiling rate. GGI is set to begin partial solar power supply to CPA by next February, with a gradual increase to the full capacity of 8.42 Megawatt-peak, meeting the port's variable power demand ranging from 7 to 13 Megawatts per day.

The financial projections suggest substantial savings for CPA, with an estimated BDT 100 crore in electricity costs over the project's lifecycle. The shift to solar power will also help stabilize operational expenditures by insulating the port from fluctuations in conventional electricity tariffs.

Environmentally, the solar project will generate clean electricity during peak daytime hours, easing the national power grid's load and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns with national decarbonization efforts and climate commitments. The project is also seen as a benchmark for greening logistics hubs nationwide, showcasing the modernization of industrial infrastructure without financial strain.

The agreement was signed by CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman and GGI CEO Mohammad Nure Alam on behalf of their respective organizations. This collaboration is viewed as a model for public-private partnerships in Bangladesh's renewable energy sector, leveraging commercial investment and technical expertise to expand solar energy adoption.
