Jhenaidah:Aman paddy cultivation in Jhenaidah district has exceeded initial targets, promising a potentially abundant harvest as lush green fields cover the region.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) initially set the target for Aman paddy cultivation at 104,500 hectares this season. However, due to increased farmer interest, an additional 100 hectares have been cultivated, bringing the total area to 104,600 hectares.
Favourable weather conditions and minimal pest and disease issues have encouraged farmers to expect a good yield. The DAE has been proactive in providing field-level monitoring and advice to help farmers control pests and diseases, ensuring proper crop care.
The distribution of cultivated land includes 25,252 hectares in Sadar upazila, 18,734 hectares in Kaliganj, 24,945 hectares in Shailkupa, 11,232 hectares in Harinakundu, 6,182 hectares in Kotchandpur, and 18,155 hectares in Maheshpur. Farmers like Mizanur Rahman from Ramnagar village have noted the benefits of favourable weather and timely crop care, which have kept pest and disease levels low.
As the harvesting season approaches, farmers across the district, including Amjad Hossain from Bhabanipur village, are providing final-stage care to their crops. Some plots have already been harvested, while most fields are expected to begin harvesting in the coming weeks.
In Harinakundu upazila, farmer Laltu Mia is also optimistic about the harvest, provided that sudden storms or strong winds do not occur during the final stages of the season.
Md Kamruzzaman, Deputy Director of the DAE, emphasized the collaboration between agricultural field workers and farmers, citing favourable weather and adequate fertiliser supplies as key factors enhancing expectations for a bumper Aman harvest. The district's paddy production is anticipated to meet local food demands and contribute to the country's overall food requirements.
