Dashmina:Agricultural entrepreneur Pabel Hossain has found success in cultivating bottle gourd and bitter gourd using the trellis method on 33 decimals of land in Dashmina Upazila. The innovative farming technique has become a lucrative source of income for the 35-year-old farmer.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Pabel has incurred a production cost of only Tk 14,000 and has already earned Tk 70,000 by selling the vegetables. He anticipates additional sales of Tk 40,000 to Tk 45,000 for the remainder of the season. His approach not only enhances his personal fortunes but also inspires local youth to engage in farming, owing to its higher yield at a lower cost.

Pabel's farm features the Marshall Super variety of bottle gourd and the Tiya Super and Parli Plus varieties of bitter gourd. The trellis, constructed from bamboo poles and wire, supports the vegetables, making plant care and harvesting more efficient. The method allows for multiple harvests, reducing the need for frequent re-construction of trellises.

The Dashmina Upazila Agriculture Office is actively supporting farmers with advice and resources to boost vegetable production through modern methods. Free seeds and fertilizers are distributed, alongside guidance on improved cultivation techniques. Young entrepreneurs, like Abu Yusuf, are following Pabel's lead, adopting the trellis method to cultivate seasonal vegetables for both family consumption and market sales.
