Lalmonirhat:Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu inaugurated a program aimed at planting over 100,000 palmyra seeds across the Lalmonirhat district. This initiative is designed to combat climate change, maintain environmental balance, and reduce the risks associated with lightning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the inauguration took place at DC Park near Chandni Bazar in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila at 1100 am. The event is part of a broader initiative organized by Sabuj Seba Jubo Biggan Sangha under the slogan "Let us build a clean environment and adorn the earth with greenery," which will be implemented across the district's five upazilas.
During the ceremony, Minister Dulu highlighted the severe impact of climate change on Bangladesh, noting the increase in lightning strikes and related fatalities. He mentioned that while government efforts have significantly reduced deaths from cyclones and tidal surges, new challenges are emerging due to changing weather patterns.
The event was presided over by Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Muha Rashedul Haque Pradhan and attended by District Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman, the organisation's founder Md. Khairul Islam, other officials, and over 100 volunteers. Organisers noted their previous efforts in planting approximately 40,000 palmyra seeds along the railway line from Teesta to Burimari, as well as conducting tree-planting programs and environmental awareness seminars. They expressed hope that the current initiative would foster public participation in environmental conservation, contributing to a greener and more habitable environment for future generations.
