Dhaka:National Road Safety Day was observed across Bangladesh with a strong emphasis on the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, safer roads, and coordinated efforts to mitigate road crashes and fatalities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this year's theme, 'Safe Roads, Prosperous Country - Bangladesh First,' underscores the critical role of road safety in the nation's development. The observance comes amid ongoing concerns over road incidents, which cause numerous deaths and injuries annually.
The organization Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA) marked the day by organizing colorful rallies in various districts. In Dhaka, a rally commenced from the central office in Kakrail, parading through the streets before concluding at the National Press Club with a brief meeting. Similarly, in Rajshahi, a rally started from the NISCHA office at Kazihata and ended at the office premises after traversing different city intersections. Additionally, Daudkandi upazila branch of NISCHA held a rally on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, culminating at the Gouripur Bus Stand Highway Police Box.
During the events, NISCHA leaders advocated for effective enforcement of traffic laws, enhancement of drivers' skills, identification and repair of hazardous roads, and accountability of relevant organizations to minimize the risks of fatalities and injuries in road accidents.
Furthermore, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) plans to hold a discussion meeting on October 28, with Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam attending as the chief guest. The government has drafted the Road Safety Act 2026, which includes proposals for mandatory free emergency treatment for crash victims, legal protection for good Samaritans, a demerit point system for traffic violations, and increased penalties for repeat offenders. This act, prepared by the Road Transport and Highways Division (RTHD), aims to create a comprehensive framework for road safety.
The proposed law seeks to prevent crashes, protect vulnerable road users, enhance vehicle and road infrastructure safety, and ensure prompt medical care for crash victims. The road transport and bridges minister recently reaffirmed the government's commitment to enacting a comprehensive road safety law by 2027.
According to World Health Organization, road crashes result in approximately 31,578 annual fatalities in Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority data indicates that 5,490 people died in road crashes in 2025, a figure significantly lower than the WHO estimate.
