Dhaka:Food facilities in Bangladesh will be required to register specified categories of food businesses and obtain licenses for specialized food products beginning November 1. This initiative aims to enhance food safety and establish transparency and accountability among food businesses nationwide, as stated in a notification from the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) issued today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BFSA notification mandates that the BFSA registration number must be displayed on food product packages. This measure will be enforced under the Safe Food (Registration and Licensing) Regulations, 2026, and non-compliance will result in legal action against offenders. The regulations, published in the government gazette on July 16, require food businesses within specified categories to apply for registration and licenses from November 1.
The regulations cover a wide range of businesses, from roadside vendors to restaurants, bakeries, and food warehouses. First-time registration for 16 conventional food business categories will be free, while specialized food products will require licenses and approvals based on business type. Operating without registration or a license will be punishable under the Safe Food Act, 2013.
Under the new system, the BFSA registration number on product packages will help identify manufacturers and marketing companies, aiding consumers in verifying company registration and lodging complaints if necessary. While registration does not guarantee product safety, other applicable regulations must be followed to maintain quality.
An approval system for specialized foods, including infant formula, health-supporting foods, and nutraceuticals, has been introduced. Additional approvals may be required for products like genetically modified and organic foods. Applications for registration and licenses must be submitted with the specified fees, and a gradual shift to a fully online application system is planned.
The BFSA advises businesses to consult Schedule 10 of the regulations for applicable fees and conditions. Registration and licenses will be valid for three years and must be renewed after expiration. The BFSA anticipates that the new system will regulate food businesses, improve transparency, and ensure accountability in consumer complaint handling.
