Sylhet:An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from Jalalabad Police Station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has been removed from his duty after participating in a cultural event at a Durga Puja mandap while on official duty.

According to United News of Bangladesh, ASI Udayan Faruk was reassigned to the Sylhet Police Lines following the circulation of a video showing him singing in uniform at the event. The video, which went viral on social media, prompted the decision by SMP Commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim, as outlined in an office order issued on Tuesday.

Police reported that Faruk was responsible for security at the Brahman-Shashan Sarbajanin Puja Mandap in the Akhalia Natun Bazar area on the night of October 19. While on duty, he participated in a cultural program organized by the Puja Udjapan Committee and performed the song 'Ore Ore Hawa' in his uniform. The video of his performance was subsequently shared on Facebook and captured the attention of senior police officials.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, SMP deputy commissioner (North), emphasized that Faruk's involvement in the cultural event while on duty was considered a dereliction of duty. The assistant commissioner of Jalalabad Police Station has been tasked with investigating the incident and submitting a report. Appropriate action will be taken against the officer once the report is reviewed.
