Chattogram:Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has emphasized that the primary identity of all citizens in Bangladesh, regardless of their religion, is that they are "Bangladeshis." He stated there should be no classification of individuals as a 'minority' based on religious or ethnic backgrounds.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister reiterated the government's dedication to creating a discrimination-free society with equal rights for all. This commitment is part of the new Bangladesh vision, which emerged following the historic 2024 July Mass Uprising.
These comments were made during an event organized by the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad in Chattogram. The gathering coincided with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to the JM Sen Hall Puja Mandap, where he interacted with members of the Hindu community.
Salahuddin Ahmed criticized a political tendency in the past where certain groups viewed the Hindu community and other ethnic groups merely as a 'vote bank.' However, he noted that this notion was dispelled during the last election, highlighting the political awareness of the people.
The minister also mentioned that past attempts to seize places of worship and properties through political violence had failed. He assured that the government is actively working to reclaim illegally occupied properties and address issues concerning temples.
He further emphasized the government's pursuit of religious harmony and security through practical measures, following the Prime Minister's directives to uphold constitutional rights and ensure equal opportunities for all citizens.
