Dhaka:Dr Zubaida Rahman, Vice-President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation and spouse of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has urged the implementation of a coordinated program across Bangladesh to ensure treatment for osteoporosis sufferers and to raise public awareness about the disease.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Zubaida Rahman described osteoporosis as a 'silent' disease that causes bones to weaken, become thin and porous, significantly increasing the risk of sudden fractures. She highlighted that this condition disrupts the normal life of those affected and diminishes their ability to perform daily activities.
Dr Zubaida Rahman made these remarks as the chief guest at a scientific seminar titled 'Osteoporosis A Preventable Epidemic' at the Super Specialised Hospital building at Bangladesh Medical University, marking World Osteoporosis Day. Organized by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh, the seminar focused on the prevalence and prevention of osteoporosis. Dr Rahman emphasized the urgent need for effective measures to address the situation, estimating that according to 2025 statistics, 60 lakh people in Bangladesh are affected by osteoporosis, with a higher prevalence among women.
Citing research, Dr Rahman noted a 40 percent prevalence of osteoporosis and a 43.5 percent prevalence of osteopenia among women aged 45 to 80 in the north-central region of Bangladesh. Moreover, a hospital-based study in urban areas found a 41.8 percent prevalence of osteoporosis among women aged 46 to 65. She called for more research and regular screening to determine the true scope of the disease in Bangladesh.
Dr Rahman proposed several preventive measures, including the formation of an 'Osteoporosis Society' to facilitate coordinated awareness programs across all 64 districts. She stressed the role of the medical community in educating the public about osteoporosis and advocated for the observance of an 'Osteoporosis Awareness Month' featuring events, rallies, and campaigns. Additionally, she highlighted the need for seminars to introduce modern diagnostic methods and emphasized addressing nutritional factors like Vitamin D deficiency and calcium intake during childhood.
The seminar, chaired by DAP President Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid, included contributions from BNP standing committee member Professor Dr Farhad Halim Donar and Dr Abdus Salam, MP. The event featured a Q&A session, a panel discussion, and a quiz, with discussions on screening and assessment tools like the 'Fracture Risk Assessment Tool' (FRAX) to evaluate fracture risk.
World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually on October 20 to raise awareness about the condition characterized by the weakening and increased fragility of bones.
