Abu Dhabi:Bangladesh faces a crucial match against Afghanistan in the tri-nation ODI series in the United Arab Emirates, as they need a victory to keep their hopes alive for the final. This encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi follows Bangladesh's 99-run defeat to Zimbabwe in the opening match, putting them in a must-win situation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Afghanistan is in a strong position after a commanding 158-run win over Zimbabwe, which has given them a significant net run-rate advantage. Even a loss to Bangladesh might not prevent Afghanistan from reaching the final. For Bangladesh, a victory is essential, and they need to achieve it by a substantial margin to improve their net run rate and surpass Zimbabwe in the standings.

Currently, Afghanistan leads the standings with a net run rate of +3.160, while Zimbabwe holds second place at -0.590. Bangladesh is in third place with a net run rate of -1.980. The head-to-head record between Bangladesh and Afghanistan shows both teams winning 11 out of their 22 ODI encounters. However, Afghanistan has dominated recent matches, winning five of the last six games held in the UAE.

Bangladesh's recent struggles against Afghanistan include a 2-1 series loss in Sharjah in 2024 and a 3-0 sweep in Abu Dhabi in 2025, where they suffered a heavy 200-run defeat after being bowled out for just 93 runs. Bangladesh will look to reverse these fortunes in the upcoming match.

Winning the toss could be crucial for Bangladesh, as the pitch in Abu Dhabi tends to slow down, making batting in the second innings challenging. The team's coach, Phil Simmons, has emphasized the importance of batting the full 50 overs, learning from their mistakes in the match against Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh faces this challenge without their regular captain Liton Das, who is sidelined with a hip injury. However, allrounder Mehidy Hasan may return to the side after recovering from a fever. Afghanistan, led by captain Rahmat Shah, is brimming with confidence and could draw additional psychological advantage from a recent drawn Test match against Bangladesh.
