Accra:Science and Technology Secretary Md Anwar Hossain described the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as a historic milestone in ensuring Bangladesh's energy security. He made these remarks while inaugurating a four-week Basic Professional Training Course (BPTC) organized by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the training program is a collaborative effort involving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), BAERA, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), and other relevant ministries. The plant achieved its first criticality on October 11, 2026, and is expected to soon contribute to fulfilling the nation's electricity demand through connection to the national grid.

The secretary emphasized the importance of nuclear safety, stating that while electricity generation is crucial, safe operation, effective regulation, and a strong safety culture are equally important. He highlighted the necessity of equipping young Bangladeshi scientists and engineers with internationally recognized expertise. Furthermore, he encouraged the trainees to leverage the knowledge and experience of IAEA experts to enhance their professional skills and bolster Bangladesh's presence in international nuclear forums.

Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr. Moinul Islam, speaking as a special guest, expressed optimism that the training would enable participants to contribute to a safe, secure, and sustainable nuclear energy program. BAERA Chairman Mahmudul Hasan presided over the inaugural ceremony and extended gratitude to the IAEA for its support in human resource development.

The four-week training program, running from October 18 to November 12, involves four IAEA technical officers and experts working alongside Bangladeshi scientists and specialists. A total of 40 trainees from BAERA, BAEC, and the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), along with senior officials, are participating in the program.
