Accra:The Wage Earners' Welfare Board (WEWB) has announced the opening of applications for education stipends aimed at supporting the meritorious children of expatriate workers. This initiative invites students who passed the 2026 SSC and equivalent exams, the 2025 HSC and equivalent examinations, as well as the 2025 Diploma-in-Engineering examinations, to apply for financial assistance.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, online applications will be accepted from October 25 to November 24. The WEWB, operating under the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, published a notice on October 6 detailing the eligibility criteria.
Eligible students include those who passed the 2026 SSC and equivalent exams and are now in their first semester or year of Class XI or equivalent, or enrolled in a Diploma-in-Engineering course. Additionally, students who passed the 2025 HSC and equivalent exams and are currently in their first semester or year at various universities or medical colleges, as well as those who completed the Diploma-in-Engineering under the Bangladesh Technical Education Board in 2025 and are pursuing a BSc in Engineering, can apply.
To qualify, applicants must have at least one parent who is a recipient of a BMET emigration clearance or a member of the WEWB. A maximum of two children per expatriate worker are allowed to apply for the stipend.
Academic requirements stipulate that SSC science students from the 2026 examinations need a minimum GPA of 5, while children of workers who died abroad require a GPA of 4. Humanities and business studies students need a GPA of 4.75 and 4, respectively. For the HSC 2025 examinations, science students should have a minimum GPA of 4.80, and those in humanities and business studies need a GPA of 4.50. The minimum GPA for children of deceased workers in both groups is set at 4. Diploma-in-Engineering students from 2025 require a minimum GPA of 3.25, and a GPA of 3 for children of deceased workers.
Applicants must submit various documents, including a copy of the expatriate worker's passport, proof of BMET emigration clearance or WEWB membership, a certificate from the educational institution, the student's bank account statement, photo, signature, and a copy of the birth registration certificate or national identity card.
