Dhaka:Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, emphasized the significance of the 1971 Great Liberation War as a people's war and a pivotal moment in the nation's history.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Speaker shared these remarks while serving as the chief guest at the 'Senior Tigers Reunion 2026,' an event organized by retired members of the 1st East Bengal Regiment at SKS Tower in the capital.

He highlighted the vital role of the 1st East Bengal Regiment, the first to revolt against the Pakistani forces, with then Major Ziaur Rahman declaring the nation's independence. The Speaker noted that without the regiment's resistance, Bangladesh might still have remained part of Pakistan. The regiment, formed in 1948, is celebrated for receiving numerous gallantry awards for its contributions to the 1965 Pakistan-India War and the Liberation War.

Reflecting on his time with the regiment, the Speaker became emotional, recalling his participation in frontline battles with courage and patience. He pointed out that people from all walks of life joined the Liberation War, and the soldiers of the East Bengal Regiment experienced both the thrill of victory and the peril of death.

The event included a screening of a documentary on the regiment's history and its contributions to the war. A crest was also presented to the Speaker by the Senior Tigers. The reunion was attended by retired regiment members, distinguished guests, and media representatives.
