Dhaka:The extension of Metro Rail's MRT Line-6 from Motijheel to Kamalapur is set to commence commercial operations in July of the coming year.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the civil construction work on the Motijheel-Kamalapur extension has achieved an overall physical progress of 84.85 percent. Brigadier General (Retd) Md Abdul Wohab, the Project Director of the Dhaka Mass Transit Development Project (MRT Line-6), revealed that mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works at the Kamalapur station are currently underway, with foreign-manufactured equipment set to be installed soon.
Project details indicate that electro-mechanical works have progressed by 58 percent, and the construction of the 1.16-kilometre viaduct on the extension is complete, having been handed over to Contract Package-7 for rail track installation. While the structural work on Kamalapur MRT Station is finished, MEP and architectural works continue and are expected to conclude by December 31, 2026.
Progress is also being made on seven integrated electro-mechanical subsystems, which comprise electrical and track systems, signaling, automatic fare collection, platform screen doors, telecommunications, lifts, and escalators.
The full MRT Line-6, which spans 21.26 kilometres from Uttara North to Kamalapur, is nearing completion. As of the end of September 2026, the physical progress of the Uttara North-Motijheel section stood at 99.67 percent. Once operational, the line will connect Uttara North directly to Kamalapur Railway Station, completing the full stretch with 17 stations, including key stops at Mirpur-10, Agargaon, Farmgate, and Dhaka University.
The metro rail began its service on the Uttara-Agargaon section on December 28, 2022, followed by the Agargaon-Motijheel section on November 4, 2023. It has since become a crucial transportation link for Dhaka, accommodating thousands of commuters daily. The first trains currently depart from Motijheel at 700 am and from Uttara North at 640 am, with passenger numbers exceeding 400,000 on average daily. Revenue from ticket sales is also on the rise as passenger volumes grow.
