New York:The government of Bangladesh is focusing on a renewed diplomatic strategy to address the ongoing Rohingya crisis, taking cues from previous BNP administrations that managed to repatriate large numbers of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam stated that the government, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, aims to revive the comprehensive diplomatic approach employed by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Islam emphasized the importance of international involvement to ensure the safe and dignified return of the Rohingyas.

Bangladesh experienced a significant influx of around 200,000 Rohingyas in 1978, which were successfully repatriated by December 1979. Another influx in 1992 saw approximately 236,000 Rohingyas returned during Khaleda Zia's tenure. These historical events demonstrate that a combination of sustained political engagement and international support can yield positive outcomes.

The current crisis has imposed severe economic, social, and security challenges on Bangladesh, with more than one million Rohingyas residing in camps. The situation is compounded by the birth of over 30,000 children in these camps annually, alongside declining international humanitarian aid.

The government is determined to initiate repatriation to avoid an indefinite humanitarian crisis. Shama highlighted the need for a stronger role from the United Nations and more significant involvement from international partners, including China, ASEAN countries, and Muslim-majority nations, to facilitate the process.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presented five proposals at a UN event in New York, emphasizing the need for a sustainable solution through early repatriation and international cooperation. Discussions with influential leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, have been initiated to secure support for creating conducive conditions for the Rohingyas' return.

Despite the complexities within Myanmar, Bangladesh remains committed to combining bilateral efforts with enhanced UN involvement to realize the objective of repatriating the displaced population.
