Rajshahi:The Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) organized a comprehensive daylong training program aimed at expanding the use of solar-powered irrigation systems in the Barind region. The initiative is designed to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of irrigation equipment.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the training, titled "Operation and Maintenance of Solar Irrigation Equipment," took place at BMDA's head office in Rajshahi. It was conducted under the Programme on Agricultural and Rural Transformation for Nutrition, Entrepreneurship and Resilience in Bangladesh (PARTNER), in collaboration with Super Star Renewable Energy Limited.

BMDA Executive Director Jahangir Alam Khan attended as the chief guest, while Engineer Dr. Md Abul Kashem, Additional Chief Engineer and officer-in-charge of the BMDA's P and D PARTNER programme, presided over the event. Khan emphasized the importance of transitioning irrigation systems to solar power, citing benefits such as a reliable electricity supply for irrigation and reduced risks of crop losses due to power and water shortages.

He noted that around 15,000 deep tube wells and low-lift pumps could potentially be converted to solar-powered systems, which might generate up to 300 megawatts of electricity for the national grid through net metering. This shift could significantly reduce BMDA's annual electricity expenses from approximately Tk 150 crore to Tk 20-30 crore.

Additionally, the authority could generate revenue by selling excess electricity back to the national grid, with ongoing discussions about utilizing carbon credits. Khan highlighted that solar-powered irrigation could boost agricultural production, lower irrigation costs for farmers, and improve BMDA's financial stability.

Engineer Abul Kashem underscored the necessity of technical expertise and skilled workforce for the effective management of solar irrigation systems. He encouraged participants to apply their newly acquired skills in the field to provide timely irrigation services.

The training included sessions on the operation of solar panels, pump controllers, inverters, pumps, and motors, along with equipment inspection, fault identification, and troubleshooting. The program was attended by BMDA officials and representatives from Super Star Renewable Energy Limited, with 30 officials and employees, including engineers and mechanics from various BMDA zones in the Rajshahi region, participating.
